Healthy agriculture

It seems like agriculture is going down two paths – go big or go niche. What is exciting to me is the interest young people have in agriculture. And with the high initial investment in traditional farming, they are going “niche.”

One of our township’s planning commissioners found a TED discussion on mono-cultures and the environment, and MinnPost had an interesting article on our weather extremes and farming.

We have land well-suited for farming in our county, and recent discussions on local economy point to the positive “multiplier” effect that agriculture-related business has. It is not the business of government to take sides on how individuals choose to farm, but to support a healthy farm economy, a healthy community, and a healthy environment. That’s good for all of us, whether we live in a city or a farm.
